Wow! 9 years old! Thank you so much to all you wonderful members and followers and supporters and, of course, letter writers that have really kept the spirit of The Handwritten Letter Appreciation Society alive all this time! I honestly can’t thank you enough.
The birthday date has rather snuck up on me this year plus we’ve been away for the last week so the celebrations will have to be a little more remote this time. I’ve been meaning to try and write this for about three months to have a look back over the Society’s history and highlights, but life has rather got in the way, so thanks for bearing with me. It was only youngest that inspired me yesterday about a possible cake design idea – red icing arriving later! So yes, it’s a bit more low-key this year, but equally I’ve been pondering our 10th birthday next year a lot and will do my best to make that a biggie!
We got back home yesterday to a heart-warming and humbling pile of post that included cards and gifts, and it made me feel like all the energy and time put into THLAS was completely worth it. Not in that I want cards and gifts, I just mean that letters and postcards and beautiful missives are hopefully arriving all over the country (and beyond) and that is something so important to continue encouraging. I occasionally think “have I used my time wisely all these years promoting letter writing and trying to inspire the world to keep writing letters?” but then letters arrive with the loveliest endorsement or memories of letters written and life events that happened because of them, and how holding onto the real non-digital non-tracked non-profiled physical world of connection via proper letters is something so worth preserving. I do just wish those in charge of postal services felt the same.

So really it was just a little note to say thank you so much once again, and that I always maintain that the best way to celebrate our birthday is to write a letter or postcard or note to someone special and pop it in a postbox.
Happy birthday, everyone!
Dinah
