We had two films in the running for our next watch party (Letters to Juliet and The Lake House) but the hot weather and the sunflowers on the movie poster made me feel it would be lovely to bring in August with Letters to Juliet set in Verona, Italy. I thought we could all be transported on a virtual romantic holiday for a full 101 minutes!
“On holiday in romantic Verona, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Mamma Mia) explores the city alone as her fiancé (Gael Garcia Bernal, Babel) spends his time working. Mesmerised by the wall of letters in Juliet Capulet’s Courtyard, she soon befriends the secretaries of Juliet, who diligently answer them every day.
When Sophie finds a decades-old, unanswered letter, she responds herself. To her surprise the author, Claire (Vanessa Redgrave, Atonement), and her uptight grandson (Christopher Egan, Eragon) arrive and sweep her along on a romantic adventure she could never have imagined…”
There are some other lovely connections to letter writing with this film too. Someone shared their treasured letter from Vanessa Redgrave recently, Taylor Swift who wrote Love Story which is used in the film is a great letter writer, and the letter which is the catalyst for the story, the address on it in Oxfordshire is only a stone’s throw from a village I lived in for the first four years of my life.
Once again, it’s just a case of finding a copy of the film either on DVD or downloading, finding a place to watch it, and us all pressing play at 7.30pm on Sunday 1st August. Bring along refreshments and snacks of your choice, and if you wanted to share a photo of your set-up on the evening (Society cuppa optional) we’d love to see!
